A Dozen Things You CAN Do In An Emergency

  • 1. Call Carpet Cleaning Manhattan immediately!
  • 2. Don't enter any room if the ceiling appears to be wet or sagging.
  • 3. Take particular precaution if the water is grey or black. It may be contaminated by sewage or other harmful microbial substances; don't touch anything in that room. Also avoid turning on fans, heating, or air conditioning.
  • 4. If water is clear, try to eliminate the flooding at its source.
  • 5. If possible turn off the supply of electricity in the affected area.
  • 6. Try to remove all electrical appliances from the affected area.
  • 7. Avoid walking on carpets or rugs.
  • 8. Removing furniture quickly from the affected area may save it from further damage. If this is not possible, place folded aluminum foil or wax paper under the feet of large furniture items.
  • 9. Items like books and clothes should be immediately removed from the affected area quickly. Potted plants also can stain the carpets or rugs and should be removed.
  • 10. Pin up draperies and skirts on furniture to prevent the formation of water lines and marks.
  • 11. Furniture pieces, counter-tops and fittings may be wiped with a clean towel.
  • 12. Never use vacuum cleaners in flooded areas, as this may cause electrical shocks.

Flood Waters

Damage caused by flood waters may also vary depending upon the type of water involved. Don't delay seeking professional assistance as Category 1 Water can worsen into Category 2 or 3 Water very quickly.

Category 1—clear water
This means that the source of water is something like a broken pipe or water-heater. This sort of water does not pose any immediate danger for humans or animals.

Category 2- grey water
Grey, filmy, or murky flood water may contain a significant level of contamination, which could cause discomfort or sickness to humans exposed to it. Clear water may also quickly turn murky or fall into Category 3 within 24-72 hours.

Category 3- black water
Black water, which may occur in situations involving mass flooding or sewage, is extremely dangerous. It contains significant microbial and pathogenic agents and is unsanitary. You should make every effort to prevent your family members or pets from being exposed to this category of flood waters.
